Furniture Design - Arabic Calligraphy
This project included designing multifunctional furniture pieces within the Arabic Calligraphy context, in which a word or a letter was chosen from a certain calligraphy type and turned into a furniture piece used in an interior space.

Calligraphy Design Style: Al-Diwani
•Diwani was one of the most important styles of that period.
•Developed in the late 15th century by Ibrahim Munif.
•Modified by Turkish calligrapher Shaykh Hamdullah.
•Practiced on council chambers (Diwan) for correspondences of Sultans.
•Cursive based on the Ta’liq style.
•Less dramatic hangings.
•Dramatically curved undotted letters joined together unconventionally.
•The endings have swishes that are below baseline of letters.
•Written without vocalization.

I chose to design two pieces of furniture that will be set in the interior design of my graduation project, an Arts & Design Centre. Therefore the design concept apprehended throughout designing the pieces of furniture are the words “Art” and “Design” in Arabic in al Diwani style specifically. This design concept is to endorse the essence and importance of art and design in everyday life as both of them create our world in every way we do not realize. As an interior designer and an artist, these two words are two important words in life that every designer and artist live by as they have a central role. Thus my concept helps me increase the awareness of the importance of art and design through creating pieces of furniture.
